Eric Kleinfeld is a Partner at Ryan, Phillips, Utrecht & MacKinnon. He practices in the areas of federal and state election, campaign finance, ethics and lobbying laws. His practice includes representing presidential, senate and congressional candidates, campaign committees, trade associations, corporations, membership organizations, and labor unions before the Federal Election Commission, Senate and House Ethics Committees and state election commissions. Mr. Kleinfeld graduated from Miami University, cum laude, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received a Juris Doctor from The Ohio State University, where he graduated with Honors in Law.
Mr. Kleinfeld was General Counsel to the 2004 Dean for America presidential campaign and the 2000 Gore/Lieberman campaign. He was Chief Counsel to the 1996 Clinton/Gore campaign and has advised other presidential, Senate, and House campaigns, including the re-election campaigns of Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Maria Cantwell. From 1991 to 1993, Mr. Kleinfeld was counsel to the Elections Subcommittee and the Task Force on Campaign Finance Reform of the U.S. House of Representatives, and in 1993, became General Counsel to the Committee on House Administration. Mr. Kleinfeld advised Members of the House on campaign finance reform, election-related legislation and internal House rules and procedures, and was the key House staff on The National Voter Registration Act ("Motor Voter") that was signed into law in 1993.
Prior to his congressional work, from 1987 to 1991, Mr. Kleinfeld was an associate at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, where he represented clients in campaign finance, election law and political ethics matters. In 1987, he served as Deputy Counsel to the Biden for President campaign, and in 1989, served as an outside counsel to House Speaker Jim Wright. Mr. Kleinfeld began his career in 1984 as a staff attorney at the Federal Election Commission, specializing in the enforcement of complex administrative cases.
Mr. Kleinfeld is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and is a member of the American and District of Columbia Bar Associations. In 2005, he was elected as an At-Large Member of the Democratic National Committee.
